Use of molecular markers for epidemiological and population studies of Peronospora tabacina
 
 

_SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS

Three years of research experience in fungal molecular biology, epidemiology and population genetics of the obligate biotroph Peronospora tabacina.

Knowledge of plant genetics, cytogenetics, plant breeding, interspecific hybridization, embryo rescue and culture, characterization, transfer and inheritance of wild genes to cultivated germplasm, host-pathogen interactions.

Ability to work collaboratively on multidisciplinary and international research team projects.

 

_PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

 

1998-current: Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Kentucky.
Use of molecular markers for epidemiological and population studies of Peronospora tabacina. Fungal molecular biology: Experience with DAN extraction, library construction and screening, DNA sequencing, PCR techniques, electrophoresis, Southern blotting, cell biology. RFLP analysis and population genetics. Growing and maintaining an obligate pathogen.

1997-1998: Postdoctoral Research Associate, Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences, Virginia Tech.
Association of seedcoat mottling with plant reactions to soybean mosaic virus and peanut mottle virus. Conducted virus inoculations and detection tests in the greenhouse and in the field (planting, pollinating and data collection). Supervising and coordinating field and greenhouse work. Data management, statistical analyses.

1994-1997: Ph.D. candidate, Dept. of Genetics, University of Córdoba, Spain.
Plant genetics, cytogenetics, and breeding: Sunflower interspecific hybridization, embryo rescue and culture, characterization, transfer and inheritance of wild genes to cultivated germplasm, host-pathogen interactions. Root parasitic weed. Conducted studies of inheritance and allelism of different sunflower sources of resistance. Gained experience with design and implementation of large scale projects. Supervise and train assigned technicians and seasonal personnal. Greenhouse and field inoculations.

Jun-Aug 1996: Visiting Scientist, Dept. of Vegetable Crops, University of California, Davis, CA.
RAPD molecular markers and mapping software for marker-assisted plant breeding. Gained direct experience with DNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis and mapping software for marker-assisted plant breeding.

Jul-Nov 1995: Visiting Scientist, USDA ARS, Northern Crop Science Lab. Sunflower Research Unit, Fargo, ND, USA.
Scientific exchange for the joint research project: Development of broomrape resistant sunflower germplasm utilizing wild Helianthus species. Production of the most difficult interspecific hybrids between diploid wild perennials and cultivated lines. Also, with tetraploid and hexaploid wild perennials. Development of interspecific amphiploids. Chromosome counting.

Jul-Sep 1994: Visiting Scientist, USDA ARS, Northern Crop Science Lab., Fargo, ND.
Training for interspecific crosses between wild and cultivated sunflower. Mechanism and methods of interspecific gene transfer with various ploidy levels. Embryo rescue and culture.

Interspecific crosses between wild and cultivated sunflower for resistance to Sclerotinia Gained experience in crossing technique: emasculation and pollination of wild species.
